Eligibility to Become a Driving Instructor
A driving instructor is a trained professional who teaches individuals how to drive safely. According to UK regulations, the eligibility criteria to become a driving instructor are:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Held a UK or EU driving licence (at least for 3 years)
- Pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

The first step is to get a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to confirm your eligibility.
DVSA Registration
The next step is online registration with DVS to begin your instructor qualification process.
Theory Test
Prepare for multiple-choice questions and hazard perception tests, and apply for the theory test.
Advanced Driving Test
Prepare for the advanced driving test, and apply for the test within two years of passing Part One.
Trainee Licence
Trainee Licence is optional but highly recommended to gain practical teaching experience.
Instructing Test
After passing the Part Two test, the next step is the instructional ability test to assess your teaching skills.

How to Get a Trainee Licence
Trainee licence is a great opportunity to gain valuable real-world experience before you go for Part Three of the test. To get a trainee licence, you must complete a minimum of 40 hours of instructor training first. Once you have met that requirement and passed Part Two of the ADI tests, you can apply for a trainee licence, which lasts for six months. However, you are allowed to charge for lessons; in that way, you can cover the cost of your insurance and vehicle.
